How We Ranked the Countries
We weighed federation membership and participation figures where national federations publish them, Olympic triathlon medals since the sport debuted at Sydney 2000, wins at the Ironman World Championship in Kona, and the size and reputation of each country’s races.
Membership numbers are not directly comparable, because some federations count one-day licences and others only annual members, so we used them as a guide to scale rather than as a strict ranking. Olympic totals are the individual and relay medals through Paris 2024.

The first modern triathlon took place at Mission Bay in San Diego on 25 September 1974, and the first Ironman followed on Oahu in 1978. Gordon Haller won that race in 11 hours 46 minutes 58 seconds.
USA Triathlon reported about 303,000 members in 2025 and 829 sanctioned events, although many members hold one-day licences. Dave Scott and Mark Allen each won six Ironman titles in Kona, and Gwen Jorgensen won Olympic gold in Rio in 2016.

Great Britain has turned triathlon into an Olympic success story. Alistair Brownlee won gold in London in 2012 and again in Rio in 2016, with his brother Jonny taking bronze in 2012 and silver in 2016, and Alex Yee won gold in Paris in 2024.
The Triathlon Industry Alliance counted more than 120,000 active racing triathletes in Britain in 2025, about 28,000 below the 2019 peak but a return to growth after a fall in 2024. Georgia Taylor-Brown won Olympic silver in Tokyo in 2021.

Jan Frodeno won Olympic gold in Beijing in 2008 and later three Ironman titles in Kona, and Germany won the mixed relay at the Paris Olympics in 2024. Lisa Tertsch became the 2025 world champion in the World Triathlon Championship Series.
