  • 3000 BCE – 1000 BCE: Origins of wrestling traced back to ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt; inclusion of wrestling in the Ancient Olympic Games.
  • 1440s – 1600s: Development of Greco-Roman wrestling in France and the popularity of Sumo wrestling in Japan; emergence of regional styles across the globe.
  • 1800s: Global spread of wrestling with distinctive styles such as “Collar and elbow” in Ireland and the US; the inception of professional wrestling for entertainment purposes.
  • 1904: Wrestling makes its modern Olympic debut featuring freestyle wrestling.
  • 1920s: A boom in professional wrestling combining athleticism and theatrics; Wrestling evolves into a spectator sport.
  • 1950s – 1960s: Increase in televised events; emergence of women’s wrestling with stars like The Fabulous Moolah revolutionizing the sport.
