Running in hijab is the hardest of the covered sports to kit out, and the reason is simple: you are generating heat continuously for forty minutes with nothing coming off. Every layer you put on is a layer you are committed to for the whole run.
So the fabric choices matter more here than in any racket sport. A lightweight sports hijab, preferably mesh at the back of the neck, a long sleeve that wicks rather than holds, and full length leggings. Dress as though it were ten degrees warmer than it is, because the second mile is the one that counts. The general running list is the version without a headscarf, and the tennis edit covers the same problem in a racket sport.
A running specific hijab in a wicking fabric is the one purchase that changes everything else. Our guide to the best sports apparel covers what else helps.

#1: Black Hijab with Black Leggings
A black sports hijab with black leggings and a long sleeve. The simplest version, and the one most runners start with.

#2: Light Hijab for Summer Runs
A lightweight mesh backed hijab for a summer run. Heat leaves through the head and neck, so a heavy scarf costs you more than a heavy top.

#3: Navy Hijab with a Bright Top
A navy hijab with a bright long sleeve. Visibility matters from October, and the bright layer belongs in the middle where it shows.

#4: Grey Hijab with Olive Leggings
A grey hijab with olive leggings and a cream top. Warm neutrals, and nothing here looks like a compromise on kit.

#5: Two Piece Hijab for Long Runs
A two piece sports hijab. Nothing to pin, nothing to check, and over ninety minutes that is the difference between running and adjusting.

#6: Hijab with a Half Zip Top
A hijab with a half zip long sleeve. The zip cools the chest without touching the scarf, which is the only regulation you get.

#7: White Hijab with Navy Kit
A white hijab with navy leggings and a navy top. Light at the head against dark kit, and it reads clearly to drivers at dusk.

#8: Thermal Hijab for Winter
A fleece lined sports hijab for genuine cold. The head is where a winter run is won or lost and a lined hijab replaces a hat entirely.

#9: Hijab with a Windproof Jacket
A hijab with a light windproof jacket. Wind chill at the neck is the worst of it, so a high collar matters more than jacket weight.

#10: Sage Hijab with Cream Layers
A sage hijab with cream layers and grey leggings. The quietest combination here and the easiest to wear on a bad day.

#11: Hijab with an Undercap for Grip
A sports hijab over a cotton undercap. Running is the sport where slippage happens most and the undercap is what prevents it.

#12: Burgundy Hijab with Black Kit
A burgundy hijab with black leggings and a black top. One colour at the head, nothing else, and it lifts an entirely plain outfit.

#13: Hijab with Reflective Trim
A hijab worn with a reflective jacket. Half the British running year is in the dark and the reflective layer belongs over everything.

#14: Pale Blue Hijab with Grey Leggings
A pale blue hijab with grey leggings and a white top. Soft throughout, and it does not look like technical kit off the road.

#15: Hijab with a Long Sleeve Sun Top
A hijab with a long sleeve sun protective top. Summer running on an exposed route is more sun exposure than most people think.

#16: Cream Hijab with Olive Kit
A cream hijab with olive kit. Warm neutrals, and cream stays cooler than any dark scarf in direct summer sun.

#17: Hijab with Loose Running Trousers
A hijab with loose running trousers rather than leggings. More airflow through the leg, which suits a hot evening run.

#18: Navy Hijab with a Vest Layer
A navy hijab with a running vest over a long sleeve. Core warmth with the arms free, for the mid season days that suit nothing else.

#19: Black Hijab with Thermal Leggings
A black hijab with fleece lined leggings and a long sleeve. Full winter kit, and the lined leggings do more than any extra top layer.

#20: Hijab with Gloves and Layers
A hijab with thin gloves and layered kit. Extremities go first in the cold and gloves change a winter run more than anything else.

#21: Lilac Hijab with White Kit
A lilac hijab with white kit. The gentlest combination here and the one that photographs best on a bright morning.

#22: Hijab with a Waterproof Shell
A hijab with a light waterproof shell and a hood. The hood over the hijab rather than instead of it, which keeps both dry.

#23: Olive Hijab with a Cream Long Sleeve
An olive hijab with a cream long sleeve and olive leggings. Nearly tonal, understated and completely unremarkable on a park route.

#24: Hijab with a Zip Pocket Legging
A hijab with leggings that have a real zip pocket. A bouncing phone ruins a run regardless of what else you are wearing.

#25: The Hijabi Running Kit
Two breathable hijabs, an undercap, two long sleeves, leggings, thermal leggings and a shell. That covers a full British running year.
