• 1922: Ralph Samuelson invented water skiing on Lake Pepin, Minnesota and toured across the United States to popularize the sport.
• 1939: The American Water Ski Association was founded and the Cypress Gardens was established in Florida, attracting local and international visitors.
• 1949 – 1950: The first commercial water skis were launched and the inaugural Water Ski World Championships were held in France, leading to increased popularity and development of the sport.
• 1960s – 1970s: Introduction of the slalom course and advancements in skiing materials and designs led to increased participation and viewership.
• 1990s: Wakeboarding gained popularity and the first World Wakeboarding Championships was held; water ski racing also emerged.
• 2000s – 2010s: The International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation and the Water Skiers with Disabilities Association initiated adaptive water skiing programs; hydrofoiling became popular.
• 2020s: Opening of cable parks worldwide providing an affordable alternative to boat-based skiing; introduction of electric boats for water ski towing.
