The first time I played golf I wore leggings and running trainers, and I spent the entire front nine convinced everyone was looking at me. Nobody was. But the worry was real enough to spoil the round, and it is the reason this list exists.
Here is the short version of the dress code at almost every club: a collar or a smart sleeveless top, no denim, no leggings as trousers, and shoes with a flat sole rather than a running tread. That is genuinely all of it. You do not need golf shoes to start, and you do not need anything branded. The summer list and the modest edit cover the two directions people usually go from here.
Buy one collared top and one pair of proper trousers or a skort, then play four rounds before you buy anything else. Our guide to the best golf apparel is where to look once you know what you actually need.
A white polo with navy trousers. If you buy only one outfit before your first round, buy this one. It is correct at every club in the country and it always will be.
A sleeveless collared top with tailored shorts. Sleeveless is allowed almost everywhere as long as there is a collar, which is the detail most beginners miss.
A long sleeve sun shirt with trousers. Sun shirts count as collared at most clubs and they solve sun protection at the same time, which is two problems in one purchase.
A navy skort with a striped polo. A stripe is the safest pattern in golf and the one that will not date, which matters when you are buying your first pieces.
A waterproof jacket over whatever you were already wearing. Rain does not cancel golf, and a beginner who has to leave early because of drizzle rarely comes back.
Flat soled trainers with a neutral outfit. You do not need golf shoes to start. You need shoes that will not tear the green, which most flat trainers will not.
A polo with a printed skort. Once you have played a few rounds and know the dress code holds, this is the first place to add something you actually like.
One collared top, one pair of trousers or a skort, flat shoes and a cap. Play four rounds in it before buying anything else, and you will know what you actually want.
