⏳ Rodeo History

  • 1864: The first recorded rodeo took place in Deer Trail, Colorado, laying the foundation for the rodeo competitions we know today.
  • 1904 to 1912: The first organized rodeo was held in Pecos, Texas, followed by other significant rodeos such as the Pendleton Round-Up in Oregon and the Calgary Stampede in Alberta, Canada by Guy Weadick.
  • 1929: Prairie Rose Henderson organized the first ever all-women’s rodeo, in Amarillo, Texas, paving the way for women in the sport and later the formation of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA).
  • 1930s: The Texas Cowboys’ Christmas Ball, a mix of traditional cowboy culture, dance, and rodeo competition, became a defining event of the decade.
  • 1945: The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), originally called the Cowboys’ Turtle Association, was founded, helping to standardize rules and elevate rodeo to a professional level.
  • 1959: The International Rodeo Association (IRA) was founded as a professional organization for cowboy athletes outside of the PRCA.
  • 1967: The first National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) was held, providing collegiate rodeo athletes a national platform.
  • 2000s: Several international events, such as the World Finals Rodeo and the Global Cup, were established to bring rodeo to a broader audience.
