⏳ BMX Racing History

• Early 1970s: Kids in Southern California start imitating motocross with their bicycles, marking the informal beginnings of BMX racing.
• 1974: Scot Breithaupt organizes the first official BMX race in Long Beach, CA and founds the National Bicycle Association (NBA).
• 1977: The American Bicycle Association (ABA) is founded to provide structure for the rapidly growing sport.
• 1981 – 1982: The International BMX Federation (IBMXF) is formed and holds its first World Championship.
• 1993: The IBMXF and the Fédération Internationale Amateur de Cyclisme (FIAC) merge to form the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).
• 2003: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announces the inclusion of BMX racing in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
• 2006: The UCI launches the Supercross World Cup, pushing the limits of the sport.
• 2010s: BMX racing’s Olympic presence ramps up, with countries like Latvia, Colombia, and Australia emerging on the international stage.
• 2020s: Despite event cancellations and restrictions due to COVID-19, BMX racing continues its growth and innovation. Highlighting the era are the Tokyo Olympics performances, notably Bethany Shriever’s gold medal win for Great Britain and Niek Kimmann’s victory for the Netherlands.
