⏳ Weightlifting History

  • Ancient Civilizations: Weightlifting has roots in ancient cultures such as Egypt, Greece, and China, emphasizing physical strength in labor and warfare.
  • Late 19th Century: The first modern World Weightlifting Championship took place in London in 1891, leading to its inclusion in the 1896 Olympics in Athens.
  • Early 20th Century: The International Weightlifting Federation was established, leading to rapid growth of the sport worldwide in the 1920s.
  • 1930s: American lifters start to dominate, thanks to the introduction of training methodologies by Bob Hoffman and others.
  • 1940s and 1950s: This period saw memorable rivalries and innovative training methodologies, pushing the boundaries of human strength.
  • 1970s: Biggest changes to date. A press event was eliminated from Olympic weightlifting, shifting focus to just the snatch and clean and jerk events. Plus, it was an era of legendary weightlifters like Vasily Alekseyev and Naim Süleymanoğlu.
  • 1980s and 1990s: Weightlifting’s growth continued with new weight categories and rule adjustments, and performances by international weightlifters.
  • 2000s: Women’s weightlifting made its Olympic debut in Sydney, enhancing the sport’s global recognition.
  • 2018: The weight classes were updated, refining the sport’s structure and competitiveness.
  • Present: Despite doping controversies and other challenges, weightlifting continues to evolve with the help of strict regulations by IWF.

❤️ Why We Love Weightlifting: There’s such power in weightlifting, it really tests your strength, both physically and mentally. The feeling of lifting heavier than before and achieving personal records is exhilarating. Next, the strategic aspect is intriguing as it combines technique, timing, and power. It’s also not tied to a specific body type, fostering inclusivity. The community is exceptionally supportive, celebrating everyone’s progress. Plus, the benefits towards overall health and wellbeing make weightlifting a lifelong passion!
