Bobsleigh races a crew of two or four down an iced track against the clock, with the push start deciding a large part of the run. Placings come from the total of two or four heats, and hundredths of a second decide medals.

⏳ Bobsledding History

  • 1870s: Bobsledding originated in St. Moritz, Switzerland; the first bobsled races took place on natural ice roads.
  • 1904: The St. Moritz Bobsleigh Club was established, becoming the first club dedicated to the sport; construction of the Olympia Bobrun
  • 1924: Bobsledding made its debut at the inaugural Winter Olympic Games held in Chamonix, France.
  • 1930 to 1940s: Introduction of two-man bobsled events at the 1932 Winter Olympics; sport endured and grew despite WWII.
  • 1950s to 1960s: Significant improvements in bobsled design and materials; expansion of bobsledding worldwide.
  • 1984: The Jamaican bobsled team made its debut at the Sarajevo Winter Olympics, broadening the sport’s reach.
  • 2002: The two-woman bobsled event was added to the Winter Olympics program, promoting gender equality in the sport.
  • 2010s: New bobsledding records were broken; the first African bobsled team competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
