The United States and Canada are by far the biggest ultimate frisbee countries. In its 2026 census, which covers the 2025 calendar year, the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) lists 53,135 grass ultimate players for the United States and 42,440 for Canada, ahead of Australia, France, Germany and Japan. The sport was invented in 1968 in Maplewood, New Jersey, and has since spread to well over 100 national federations.

How We Ranked the Countries
We weighed four things: how many people play according to the WFDF Annual Census 2026 (self-reported by the national federations for calendar year 2025), how organised the domestic scene is in teams and events, how much the sport matters in the country’s sporting culture, and how strong its national teams are at the World Ultimate Championships and the World Games.
The census is self-reported, and countries count players in different ways, so some figures include school and recreational players and are not directly comparable with paid memberships. We use the census numbers because they are the only source that covers every country on the same basis. Medal counts come from the published tables for the World Ultimate Championships and the World Games.

Ultimate was invented in the United States. Joel Silver, Buzzy Hellring and Jonny Hines developed the game in Maplewood, New Jersey, in 1968, and the first sanctioned game was played at Columbia High School. Columbia High beat Millburn High 43-10 in the first interscholastic game in 1970, and Rutgers beat Princeton 29-27 in the first college game in 1972.
Today the United States has the largest playing base in the world and the strongest national teams. It won all three senior divisions at the 2024 World Ultimate Championships on the Gold Coast, and it took mixed gold at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu with a 13-12 win over Canada. At home, the semi-professional UFA runs a league that crowned the Boston Glory in August 2025, and college ultimate is played on hundreds of campuses.

Canada has the second-largest ultimate scene on the planet and by far the largest outside the United States. The WFDF census reports 42,440 grass ultimate players in 2025, together with 2,600 registered teams.
Canada is also the long-standing number two in competition. According to the Wikipedia medal table it has won 10 golds, 12 silvers and 10 bronzes at the World Ultimate Championships, and it hosted the 2008 edition in Vancouver. In Chengdu in 2025 Canada reached the World Games final and lost to the United States 13-12 on universe point.

Australia has the third-largest ultimate community in the WFDF census, with 7,158 players and 97 registered teams. The country also leads Oceania, where the census counts 8,301 grass ultimate players in total.
Australia hosted the 2024 World Ultimate Championships on the Gold Coast, where the Open team (the Dingoes) won bronze and the Women’s team (the Firetails) also won bronze. At the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama, Australia reached the final and lost 13-11 to the United States.

France has the largest ultimate scene in continental Europe by the numbers the federations report, with 5,802 players in the 2025 census. The French mixed team is one of the strongest in the world.
At the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, France beat Germany 13-10 in the bronze medal game. At the 2024 World Ultimate Championships the French mixed team beat the host Australians on universe point in the match for third place, according to Ultiworld.

Germany has the second-largest ultimate scene in Europe, with 5,780 players and 130 registered teams in the 2025 census. The sport is organised by the German Frisbee Sport Federation (Deutscher Frisbeesport-Verband), which celebrated its 35th birthday and recognition by the national sports confederation DOSB.
The German mixed team beat the United States 13-10 at the 2022 World Games, and in 2025 it finished fourth in Chengdu after a 13-10 loss to France in the bronze medal game. The next World Games in 2029 will be held in Karlsruhe, and the federation has named a medal there as one of its major goals.

Japan is the strongest ultimate country in Asia. Flying discs arrived in the country in 1969, the national association was founded in Nagoya in 1975 and became the Japan Flying Disc Association in 1984. The WFDF census lists 4,867 players and 271 registered teams.
Japan has hosted two World Ultimate Championships, in Utsunomiya in 1992 and in Sakai in 2012. The Open team won silver at the 2024 Worlds after losing the final to the United States 15-4. At the World Games Japan won mixed bronze on home soil in Akita in 2001.

Ultimate in the United Kingdom is organised by UK Ultimate, and the WFDF census counts 4,628 grass ultimate players for Great Britain. University clubs are the backbone of the scene, and national teams compete as Great Britain at world and European events.
Britain has hosted the World Championships three times: twice in Colchester in 1986 and 1994, and in London in 2016. The London event drew more than 3,000 athletes from 39 countries, according to WFDF, and the finals at Allianz Park attracted a crowd of nearly 10,000. The United States won all three gold medals.

Italy has one of the larger ultimate scenes in southern Europe, with 2,448 players and 60 registered teams in the WFDF census. Bologna in particular has had an ultimate community for more than 30 years, according to local press.
In 2023 Bologna hosted the European masters and grand masters championships with about 800 athletes from 18 nations, and Italian national teams have won European medals at youth and senior level. Italy has not yet reached the podium at the World Ultimate Championships.

Colombia is the rising force of Latin American ultimate. The WFDF census counts 1,300 players, and the national teams have become regulars at the World Games, where Colombia played in both 2022 and 2025.
The Colombian women reached the final of the 2024 World Ultimate Championships by beating host Australia 15-10, and lost a close final to the United States 14-12. A few months earlier Colombia had beaten the United States 13-12 at the Torneo Eterna Primavera in Medellín, according to Ultiworld.

Sweden is small in player numbers but one of the most important countries in ultimate history. The first World Championships were held in Gothenburg in 1983, the year before the WFDF was formed, and Sweden hosted the event again in Jönköping in 1996.
Sweden was the top nation at the 1984 Worlds in Lucerne and again in 1996 on home soil, according to the Wikipedia table of editions. Its total of 16 medals is the fourth-highest of any country in the all-time table.
