Softball was born in the United States, where the first known game was played in Chicago on Thanksgiving Day 1887, and the country is still its biggest market: USA Softball, founded in 1933 as the Amateur Softball Association, runs youth, adult and national team programs across the country. How We Ranked the Countries
We weighed four things: how many people play (registered teams and players reported by national federations and the WBSC), how deeply softball is rooted in schools, colleges and club systems, the strength of domestic leagues and tournaments, and results at the Olympics, the world championships and the continental games.
Softball has been an Olympic sport for women only in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2020, and it returns at the Los Angeles Games in 2028. The medal counts in the glance table therefore cover those five tournaments. World titles are counted separately for the women’s and men’s world championships.

Softball began in Chicago in 1887 and spread through the United States as a summer sport for every age group. USA Softball was founded in 1933, runs youth and adult programs across the country, and is based in Oklahoma City, which also hosts the NCAA Women’s College World Series each year.
The American women won the first three Olympic tournaments, in 1996, 2000 and 2004, and took silver in 2008 and 2020. They have won 12 of the 18 Women’s Softball World Cups, most recently in 2022, though Japan beat them in the 2024 final in Italy. The men’s side has five world championship titles.

Softball is a big school and corporate sport in Japan, played by tens of thousands of girls from elementary school up and by company teams in the Japan Diamond Softball League. The Japan Softball Association also counts thousands of coaches, umpires and scorers who keep the pyramid running.
Japan won the Olympic title in Beijing in 2008, when pitcher Yukiko Ueno threw 413 pitches in three games over two days, and again at home in Tokyo in 2021 with a 2-0 win over the United States. The team added a fourth World Cup title in 2024, beating the Americans 6-1 in the final, and the WBSC listed Japan as the number one team in the world at the end of 2025.

Softball reached Canada early: the first league outside the United States was organised in Toronto in 1897, and fastpitch has remained a summer staple on the Prairies and in Ontario ever since. Canada hosted the 2025 Men’s Softball World Cup in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
The women’s team won the bronze medal at Tokyo 2020 by beating Mexico 3-2, after losing the bronze medal game to Australia in 2008. Canada won the women’s Pan American Games in 2015, and the men have won the world championship four times.

Australia won the very first Women’s Softball World Championship in Melbourne in 1965, beating the United States 1-0 in the final. The national team, the Aussie Spirit, took part in all five Olympic softball tournaments.
The Aussies won bronze in 1996, 2000 and 2008 and silver in Athens in 2004, losing the final 5-1 to the United States. The men are strong too, with world titles in 2009 and 2022.

Softball is one of New Zealand’s most successful team sports. The men’s national team, the Black Sox, have won more men’s world championships than any other nation, with titles in 1984, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2013 and 2017, plus a shared title in 1976.
The women’s White Sox won the 1982 World Championship in Taipei with a 2-0 win over Chinese Taipei. In 2025 the Black Sox reached another world final in Prince Albert but lost 3-0 to Venezuela.

Italy is the strongest softball country in continental Europe. The women have won a record 14 European Championships, with the most recent title in 2025, and the national federation runs softball together with baseball.
Italy first played at the Olympics in 2000 and its best result was fifth place. In 2024 the country hosted the Women’s Softball World Cup in the towns of Castions di Strada and Buttrio, where Japan beat the United States in the final.

Mexico is one of the strongest softball nations in Latin America and has played at the World Cup since 1970. The women reached the Olympic tournament for the first time at Tokyo 2020.
In Tokyo the team lost the bronze medal game 3-2 to Canada and finished fourth. Mexico won a playoff against China in 2026 to qualify for the 2027 World Cup Finals.

The team won gold at the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2018 and 2023, and the WBSC listed Puerto Rico third in its women’s world ranking at the end of 2025. Its best World Cup finish is fifth place, in 1986.

At the world championships China finished second in 1986 and 1994 and third in 1990. The country hosted the 2006 World Cup in Beijing, but the team has slipped down the world ranking since then.
