• 1840s: Lieutenant John Fremont and Horace H. Day use rubber rafts for exploration of the Rocky Mountains.
• 1920s to 1930s: Adventurers utilize foldable kayaks, “Faltboote”, for white water navigation in remote locations.
• 1940: Clyde Smith develops the inflatable pontoon raft, popularizing rafting further.
• 1960s to 1970s: International Scale of River Difficulty developed, aiding growth of recreational white water rafting.
• 1972: White water slalom canoeing debuts at the Olympic Games in Munich, Germany.
• 1980s to 1990s: Expansion of white water rafting worldwide with the introduction of competitions and professional events.
• 2000s to Present: Continued evolution in terms of equipment, safety measures, and eco-friendly practices.
