🏊‍♂️ Swimming

Competitive swimming is raced in four strokes over distances from 50 metres to 1500, in pools of 50 metres long course or 25 short course. Records are kept separately for the two pool lengths, because the extra turns make short course faster.

  • 2500 BCE: Evidence of swimming in Ancient Egyptian civilization.
  • 1538: Nicholas Wynman wrote “Colymbetes,” the first book about swimming.
  • 1742: Establishment of the London Bridge Swimming Club, one of England’s first swimming clubs.
  • 1837: Formation of the National Swimming Society in London.
  • 1870: Foundation of the Melbourne Swimming Club in Australia.
  • 1896: Inclusion of swimming in the modern Olympic Games.
  • 1908: Establishment of the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA).
  • 1930s: Developments in swimming strokes and techniques; Clare Dennis championing a more streamlined breaststroke.
  • 1950s to 1970s: Introduction of innovative swimwear material; Launch of the first Swimming World Championships (1973).
  • 1980s to 2010s: Introduction and later ban of full-body, non-textile suits; emergence of swimming record-breakers like Michael Phelps, Ian Thorpe, and Katie Ledecky.
