Rowing is a boat racing sport in which every athlete pulls one oar in sweep boats or two in sculling. Crews race side by side over 2000 metres, and because the rower sits backwards, the coxswain or the bow does the steering.

  • 1715: The first recorded rowing race took place on the River Thames in England.
  • 1829: Inaugural Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race, marking rowing’s transition from a profession to a competitive sport.
  • 1839: The Henley Royal Regatta was founded, attracting significant spectator interest.
  • 1850s: Rowing began to flourish in the United States, with the first Harvard-Yale race and establishment of notable rowing clubs.
  • 1876 to 1893: Expansion of rowing internationally, with the first Australian Rowing Championships and formation of FISA.
  • 1900: Rowing made its debut in the modern Olympic Games during the Paris Olympics.
  • 1976: Women’s rowing competitions included in the Olympics for the first time during the Montreal Olympics.
  • 1990s to 2000s: Introduction of adaptive rowing programs for para-athletes and inclusion of rowing events in the Paralympic Games.
