25 Preppy Golf Outfits for Women

Preppy and golf grew up in the same place, which is why preppy dressing on a course never looks like a costume the way it can anywhere else. Everything in this style was originally sportswear, and putting it back on a fairway is just returning it home.

The ingredients are narrow and specific: pleated skirts, cable knits, wide stripes, tartan, argyle, a collar, and colours that are bright but never neon. Two colours per outfit is the working limit, three if one of them is white. Where old money style is about disappearing, preppy is happy to be seen, which is the main difference between this list and the old money edit. The country club list shares much of the same rail.

Almost none of this needs to be expensive, because the look rests on shape and colour rather than fabric. Our guide to the best golf apparel covers where it does matter.

#1: Navy Polo with a Pleated White Skirt

A navy polo tucked into a pleated white skirt. The founding outfit of the entire category, and the tuck is not optional if you want it to read as preppy rather than sporty.

#2: Pink Polo with a Green Skort

A pink polo with a green skort. Pink and green is the most preppy colour pairing there is, and on a golf course it looks entirely at home rather than deliberate.

#3: Cable Knit Sweater over a White Collar

A cream cable knit with a white collar showing underneath. Cable knit is preppy shorthand, and the visible collar is what stops it looking like a jumper you found.

#4: Argyle Sweater Vest with Navy Trousers

An argyle sweater vest over navy trousers. Argyle came from golf and went everywhere else, and it looks better back on the course than it does anywhere it went.

#5: Striped Polo with a Navy Skort

A wide striped polo above a navy skort. Two colour stripes only, and the wider the stripe the better it works. Fine stripes read as business shirt rather than sport.

#6: Tartan Skirt with a Cream Polo

A tartan pleated skirt with a plain cream polo. Tartan carries the entire outfit, so nothing else is allowed to happen anywhere above the waist.

#7: Yellow Polo with White Shorts

A bright yellow polo with white shorts. Yellow is the preppy brightest allowed, and white below is what stops it from tipping into a high visibility vest.

#8: Navy Blazer over a White Skort

A navy blazer over a white polo and skort for the clubhouse. The blazer is not for playing, and having one in the boot is exactly the preppy instinct.

#9: Green Polo with Pink Trousers

A green polo above pink trousers. Colour below the waist is the braver version of the same pairing, and pink trousers are more traditional in golf than people assume.

#10: White Polo with a Red Skort

A white polo with a red skort. Red is the third preppy primary after navy and green, and it needs white next to it or it goes heavy very quickly.

#11: Cream Cable Cardigan with a Navy Skirt

A cream cable cardigan over a navy pleated skirt. Cardigan rather than jumper, because you can take it off at the fourth hole without disturbing a ponytail.

#12: Light Blue Polo with White Trousers

A pale blue polo with white trousers. The gentlest outfit in the category and the one that suits a hot day, since everything else here involves knitwear.

#13: Navy and White Striped Skort

A navy and white striped skort with a plain navy polo. Stripes below the waist are rarer and better, and matching the polo to one stripe colour keeps it tidy.

#14: Kelly Green Sweater with White Trousers

A kelly green sweater over white trousers. Kelly green is the loudest colour preppy fully endorses, and against white it looks crisp rather than shouted.

#15: Pink Cardigan over a White Polo

A pink cardigan over a white polo and skort. Soft above, clean below, and it is the most comfortable outfit here for a cool morning that turns warm.

#16: Madras Skort with a Navy Polo

A madras checked skort with a navy polo. Madras is summer preppy in a single fabric, and it wants the plainest, darkest top you own.

#17: White Sweater Vest with a Pleated Skirt

A white sleeveless knit over a pleated skirt. Sleeveless knitwear is the most specific preppy garment and it works because it never trended and so never dated.

#18: Navy Polo with Khaki Shorts

A navy polo with khaki shorts. The most everyday outfit in the category, and khaki survives an entire summer of bunkers without ever looking tired.

#19: Red Cardigan with a White Skort

A red cardigan over a white polo and skort. One strong colour and two clean pieces, which is the whole formula reduced to its simplest possible form.

#20: Green and White Striped Polo

A green and white striped polo with a white skort. Two colours, one pattern, nothing else, and it is impossible to get wrong.

#21: Navy Skort with a Pink Sweater

A navy skort under a pink fine gauge sweater. The reverse of the usual pink and navy, and putting the colour on top is the more flattering of the two.

#22: Gingham Skort with a White Polo

A gingham skort with a plain white polo. Gingham is madras's tidier relative, and it is the one check that never looks like it is trying too hard.

#23: Cream Polo with a Navy Cable Vest

A cream polo under a navy cable knit vest. Texture rather than pattern, which is the more subtle route into this style and the one that lasts longest.

#24: Yellow Sweater with a Navy Skirt

A yellow fine gauge sweater over a navy pleated skirt. Yellow knitwear is rarer than it should be in golf, and it lifts a grey day better than any waterproof.

#25: Full Preppy Kit in Navy, White and Green

Navy, white and green across every piece, from visor to shoe. Three colours is the preppy limit, and staying inside it means everything works with everything.
