Golf shorts are harder to get right than trousers. The inseam has to be long enough for the club, short enough to be worth wearing in the heat, and cut so it does not ride up when you walk eighteen holes. I have owned a lot of pairs that failed at least one of those.

What I look for now is a five to seven inch inseam, a flat waistband with a real belt loop, and pockets deep enough to hold a ball and a tee without them working their way out. Once the shorts are right, the top is the fun part. If the morning is still cold when you tee off, the spring outfits solve that better, and for the shoulder seasons the modest and full coverage edition is the more useful list.

One thing worth saying out loud: shorts mean sun. Four hours of it, on the back of your legs and neck, with almost no shade on most courses.
