Muay Thai is the Thai striking art known as the art of eight limbs, because fists, elbows, knees and shins all count as weapons. Clinch fighting and sweeps are legal, which is what separates it from kickboxing.

⏳ Muay Thai History

  • 16th Century: Developed as a warrior tradition under the reign of King Naresuan, rising figures such as Nai Khanom Tom showcased the effectiveness of the martial art.
  • 19th Century: Modernized by Rama V, known as King Chulalongkorn, incorporating western concepts and establishing training camps and grading systems for fighters.
  • 1910-1920: Significant developments with standardization of rules and regulations including safety guidelines, protective gear, and weight classes.
  • 1930-1950: Flourishing after World War II, achieving global recognition with the establishment of the World Muay Thai Council.
  • 1960-1980: Golden age in Thailand, influential fighters gain legendary statures and the martial art spreads to western countries.
  • 1990-2000: Integration into media and establishment of the International Federation of Muaythai Associations, raising global profile.
  • 2000-2020: Increased participation and recognition as a fitness activity and self-defense technique and gaining provisional recognition as an Olympic sport.
