⏳ Boxing History

• 688 BC: Origin of boxing as an official Olympic sport in Ancient Greece. Matches were won by knockout or submission.
• 1700s: Evolution of modern boxing in England; introduction of Broughton’s Rules.
• 1867: Drafting of Queensberry Rules, establishing the use of gloves, three-minute rounds and one-minute breaks between rounds.
• Late 19th Century to Early 20th Century: First heavyweight champion under Queensberry Rules, John L. Sullivan, marks the end of the bare-knuckle era. Legendary fighters Jack Dempsey, Joe Gans, and Sam Langford led to rapid growth of boxing.
• 1920s to 1930s: Boxing stars like Joe Louis, Gene Tunney, and Max Schmeling captivated worldwide audiences with their iconic matches.
• 1960s to 1970s: Rise of legendary figures like Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and George Foreman; “Fight of the Century” between Ali and Frazier; “Rumble in the Jungle” between Ali and Foreman.
• 1980s: Introduction of rising boxing stars “The Four Kings:” Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns, and Roberto Durán; Mike Tyson becomes the youngest heavyweight champion in history at 20 years old.
• 1990s to 2000s: Boxing experienced further growth and change during these decades. The appearance of Women’s boxing and the rise of stars like Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Manny Pacquiao.
