Ultimate is a seven-a-side disc game with no referees at any level: players call their own fouls under the Spirit of the Game. You cannot run with the disc, so the offence moves by throwing and cutting, and a turnover changes possession on the spot.

⏳ Ultimate Frisbee History

• 1968: Ultimate Frisbee is invented by Joel Silver, Johnny Hines and Buzzy Hellring at Columbia High School in New Jersey.
• 1972 to 1975: The sport expands beyond high schools, gaining popularity within the wider college community. The first intercollegiate game is played between Rutgers University and Princeton University.
• 1979: The Ultimate Players Association (UPA), now known as USA Ultimate, is founded.
• 1983: The first World Ultimate Club Championships (WUCC) takes place in Gothenburg, Sweden, marking the sport’s international emergence.
• 1985 to 1986: The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) is founded, becoming the international governing body for all flying disc sports.
• 1991: The first iteration of the Ultimate European Championships takes place in Finland, highlighting the sport’s global reach.
• 2005 to 2010: The Ultimate Sports Program is founded in 2005, bringing the sport to underprivileged youth in the United States.
• 2010: The AUDL (American Ultimate Disc League) is established, marking the beginning of professional Ultimate Frisbee in the United States.
• 2015: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) formally recognizes the WFDF, paving the way for Ultimate Frisbee to potentially become an Olympic event.
