Who invented water skiing?
Ralph Samuelson, who was 18 when he worked out how to ski behind a boat on Lake Pepin in Minnesota in 1922. He later added the first ramp jump.
What are the three events in tournament water skiing?
Slalom, tricks and jump. A skier who competes in all three is scored on the combined result, which is known as overall.
How does a slalom course work?
The skier crosses the wake to round six turn buoys. Once a pass is completed at the maximum boat speed, the tow rope is shortened for the next pass, and the skier keeps going until a buoy is missed.
Which body governs international water skiing?
The International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation, the IWWF. It sets the rules for slalom, tricks, jump, barefoot, racing and wakeboard competition.
