Long track is raced on a 400 meter oval in pairs against the clock. Short track is raced on a 111.12 meter oval marked on a standard ice rink, with several skaters starting together and passing each other directly.
What is a clap skate?
A skate whose blade is hinged at the front, so the heel lifts away from the blade at the end of each push and the blade stays on the ice longer. It reached the Olympics at Nagano in 1998 and times dropped sharply.
